Hi there! I'm veeeery new to this and just got my first flock of buttons- have done a bunch of research but constantly afraid of messing up for these little guys. I recently got my small flock of 6 buttons, still figuring out the sex of a few of them - particularly two identical white ones I keep mixing up. One of these guys (I think male!) is quite skittish and got away from me twice while I was transferring him into the cage I set up, and flew into a window and a wall. It wasn't at super high speed or height, but definitely flustered him and shook him up.

Since then as the birds are settling into their new home, the rest have been poking around and exploring, while this poor little guy has been holed up in the corner under some fake foliage for about 80% of the day. He doesn't have any discharge or visible blood, and his eyes still seem alert, but he only gets up to grab water or if scared out of his corner. I haven't seen him eat but he might be. His feathers are a bit disheveled and two of the other quails have been grooming him a bit. I assume if something is physically wrong with him it is potentially a concussion or soreness from his crashes, and he isn't showing signs of illness at the moment. Should I separate him into a hospital pen to get his bearings or let him stay with his flock unless he declines further?

I’d just leave him. It is traumatising for any bird to move into a new environment, I don’t think flying into things helped. At this point unless you have to I’d just let him be and try not to disturb him. Eventually he’ll come out and start exploring. If you notice he starts sleeping a lot or acting sick I’d just put some electrolytes in their water, if you want you can put some in now to.

Thanks both! He’s still shy but seems to be doing much better today.

I’ve had tropical birds growing up but these guys are different enough that I’m just really nervous I’ll let them down.

Checking in a week later and still worried about the little guy (or gal -- the larger of the two white ones who I assumed was the hen has exhibited breeding behaviors, so this one may be a hen after all) is still hiding in the corner most of the day. He/she comes out to dust bathe, and occasionally runs around with the others (I assume eating/drinking but I haven't seen it), and sleeps in a circle with the others at night, but otherwise still hides all day.

The others have gotten really into breeding/laying (I had a surprise extra roo) so maybe this one is just still overwhelmed and not interested?

I am trying to wait him/her out a bit more in case it's just extreme stress, but I'm starting to want to check for physical signs of any issues that could be contributing to the hiding.
