Hello, Everyone!

My name is Audra and I'm a brand new baby chick owner. Last Thursday we bought four baby Barred Rock chicks. They are getting feathers already! I don't have a farm, but the goal is to have one by the end of 2015. So for now, my backyard is my farm.

A little about me: I'm an avid vegetable gardener, a wife and mom to 3 (two of which I homeschool), a master gardener and aspiring farmer! I like to read, knit, I'm learning computer programming, and I wrote two books that are just sitting on my computer. I also have a seasonal garden blog that I do:

I love being outdoors and learning new things. That's it.

If I can just get past being afraid of them pecking me when I go to pick them up to change the bedding in the brooder. I learned how to pick them up long ago on my grandmother's farm in Minnesota (surprised I remembered!) but just getting the nerve to do it each time is my little challenge. Once they are in my hands, I love holding them...it's just getting there!

They are just exploring their world with their beaks. But I will say when they get older, the beaks clamp down even harder! When my birds were young, I could feed them out of my hands. But as they aged, I can't hand feed anymore as their beaks are just too sharp. And watch your eyes, teeth and face! They will go after shiny eyes, your teeth look like food and other parts of the face seem to be exciting to chickens!

You will get used to them. They are so much fun!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your new chicks! They do take a little getting used to, especially when they are at the must peck at everything I see baby stage. There are several good articles in the Learning Center on making pets out of chicks.

Good luck with your chicken raising adventures, and I hope you find everything you need to know! Glad to have you with us. Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center (If you haven't already)!
It is the best place to go for advice!
