 Hey all! My family and I from Upstate NY on Seneca Lake are BRAND NEW to chickens....in doing our research, I used BYC hugely for tips and tricks. We ended up buying a pre made pre owned amish built 4x6 Quaker style with a 6 nest box protrusion. It's so pretty, but im guessing wont stay so for long.....we havent gotten hens yet, we decided to go with a half dozen laying hens. If this first year goes well, we will expand the commune and add more next year maybe we'll brood some chicks. I've got the coop, the run, the feed, the grit and oyster shell, the waterers( a 5 gallon home made for the run, and a 1 gallon PVC tube style for the inside of the coop. Im hoping I got everything, I know my daughters(6 and 3) will enjoy raising them and collecting eggs, and I'll enjoy fertilizing my garden with the collected poopy. I look forward to getting my chickens and raising them!

God bless guys and gals!

Hello and welcome to BYC. I'd suggest getting only 6 hens. Anymore and assuming winter will confine your birds to the coop for even a few days of the year and the overcrowding could result in negative behaviour. More chickens may work if you plan on at large and at least partially covered run. This link may help - http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-much-room-do-chickens-need

I meant to say Half dozen birds, the run has a roof and will have 3 solid walls come winter. plus underneath the coop is wide open and run space as well about 18" underneath.
