Good Morning Everyone,

My name is Justina Thoune. Matthew (my husband) and I are currently in the process of building my dream chicken coop. I have ordered and am not so patiently waiting for all my cute little chicks to arrive. This is our first time raising chickens and am hoping that it goes well.

I do have a few questions that I am hoping someone with more experience can help with. We have ordered a mixture of 10 Broilers, Browns and Special Blacks as well as 2 turkeys, 2 White Peking and 2 Rouens ducks. Can all these birds share the same coop and run? I have been getting conflicting information on the internet. My coop is going to be 8ft.x12ft with the run being 8ftx20-24ft. Also can or do the chickens share nesting boxes or do I need to have one for each bird?

I'm sure that I will be thinking of more questions later but for now I am glad to be part of this wonderful site. Thank you all for reading and thank you in advance to anyone who posts!

Sincerely,

Justina & Matthew Thoune

I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but from what I've learned you shouldn't house chickens with ducks and/or turkeys. Not so sure about right at first when brooding, but I'm sure someone with way more experience will come along and answer your query...best of luck to you in your new venture!!

Welcome to BYC!

Iwiw60 has set you straight....you can not house chickens with turkeys as they both can carry diseases that can infect both flocks. Ducks need a lot of water to play in and keep their nostrils clean. So you will need to house each of these species in their own coops. They all have different feed requirements as well. The turkeys will need gamebird or turkey feed.

As for the layers, you don't need a box for each bird. They say 1 box for every 4 hens, however I found that I needed 1 box for every 2 birds. I have too many waiting lines and broodies. So it is up to you.

You might want to stop by our learning center here on BYC for lots of great tips on raising your new flock...

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You've gotten some good advice above. Different kinds of poultry have different requirements, and you have to be sure to meet each ones needs if you keep them together, many people find it simpler to keep them apart. You might want to check out the Duck and Turkey forums to see how people keep theirs and chickens. https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/42/ducks and https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/20/turkeys Female ducks you can keep with chickens, male ducks can injure hens trying to mate with them so it is usually not recommended, with turkeys you especially have the Blackhead problem you need to keep in mind. There are also some good articles in the Learning Center and threads from people keeping ducks and chickens etc together, ie https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-to-keep-different-poultry-types-living-together-in-one-coop
