Hi Everyone,
Started my new adventure of raising little chicks. Got 6 (limited inside our city limits) 3 different kinds.
So I bought locally and got 2 Black Australop, 2 Golden Stars and 2 Easter Eggers. I've seen several places to order
your little chickadees but opted to walk in and pick them out. I'm single lady that works FT so I have my morning duties
and then extra duties in the evening. Question: Do I need to clean coop 1X, 2X or 3X's weekly. I really don't know.
And...... do I always keep food in abundance? Mine have gotten really fat in the last 10 days. I can see their growth.
The other pet at home is small 16 lbs. Westie who loves watching over them every time we are outside. Happy.. to be a part of this chicken community.

Glad to meet you. Best wishes with your current chicken plans! Welcome to BYC. I look forward to hearing more stories and news of your birds.

People have different opinions about coop cleaning. I and a couple other members with heavy schedules or disabilities do lower cleaning schedules. In that case, you probably want to go with the Deep Bedding method.
Here is a post discussing pros and cons
and the article that came out of it

P.S. chickens need to have their feed available at all times (except when they are sleeping). When you say your chickens have gotten fat, you may be seeing their feathers fluffing out and growing in. Chickens get fat (which IS bad for their health, just like for people) when you give them too many treats (meal worms, seeds, fruits which can cause diarrhea in quantity). Limit them to their high quality feed (Dumore seems to get a BAD RAP - get something like Purina or MannPro), but be sure they have plenty at all times.

Oh, thanks so much! I agree it maybe feathers. I started them on some starter food and very little treats except for cabbage and greens. They love that. I appreciate the information.
