Hello! Welcome to BYC.
I'd use some hardware cloth on your vents. Louvered openings may allow snakes and rodents to get in. Also you need 1 sq ft of permanent ventilation per chicken.
We'd love to see pictures.
Hi janiedoe ☺️ My louvered are enclosed with metal slates the only snakes getting through would be inchworm sized…not sure how to describe them.

I have an older pic…we have the door and chicken door installed this week-end. I will have to update my pic here later.

Coop is 4’ X 8’ and the covered run will be 14’ X 8’.

Hope to free range a bit when I am home during the summer months. 😃 We do have fox and raccoon sightings near by so supervision will be necessary.

I have 2 vents (louvered-so no critters) high up by the rooftop and a window opposite the people door
That's no where near enough.
This is my coop. Last year we had many nights in a row that were sub-zero with the days not getting into double digits. It has a ridge vent, the space where light is coming in between the rafters is open as are the gable peaks and 2 pop doors. There are two windows away from the roost are that left cracked open for the winter.
I have no insulation in the coop.

I haven’t decided on heat lamps
Not a good idea.
I did put up a few panel heaters for the longer cold snaps we had last winter and placed my 4 year olds in front of them. The rooster still got minor frostbite but he didn't lose more tissue. It all healed.

Wow pretty coop! I love that you have poop boards. I need to research those more.

The people door is Dutch so the top half can be left open with hardware cloth covered if needed in summer. Opposite of that is a window (again hardware cloth) that will be covered or partially covered in winter as needed. That window faces north though and not sure how often it will be open for winter prevailing winds will be on that side.

Hopefully we will not have moisture problems—so hard to know with our extreme temps here and living on a peninsula. We are more worried about drafts-and making sure the chicks don’t get blown away when our winds howl.

Do you have a favorite heat panel I can check out?
