I’ve been lurking for about 6 mos now when I was researching how to start a flock and what you need to build a chicken coop/run. I’m mostly worried about wintering chickens here in Mn. Last winter we had sub zero temps for long periods of time and alotta ice!!!
Welcome here my chickens love the cold a lot better than these temps right now.

Right?! We made it to 100 today! My girls are sure glad to be inside in their brooder…I chose the breeds of chickens for the extreme cold 🥶 when I ordered hoping they’d be better off overall. What kind of breeds do you have @Happy hen lover?

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us :ya

@duluthralphie stop by and say hi
Thank you!

@duluthralphie we need to chat coops! I’ve moved somewhere up away from the cities and the weather is just like Duluth! (If that’s where you are?!)
How do I keep the chooks from turning into chickcicles?! We can still adjust the coop build if needed. Feel like there’s so much conflicting info out there for what to do and what NOT to do…?

Rhode Island Red, Black Australorp, Red Sex Links, Speckled Sussex, I wanted barred rock but they were sold out.
This year I added Easter Eggers, California whites, Smokey Pearls.
Went for 2 more chicks and ended up with 11. !!!! Oops! Sorry hubby handyman :hugs :barnie. Pic is my original hens survived 23 below their first winter. I personally stay away from the lighter breeds .

Oh she’s pretty!!! I wanted a speckled Sussex but it was one breed my hatchery had to “replace” on my order because of that darn bird flu 😷

How do you like your Rhode Island Reds?

Mine right now are loud and very bossy. One is intent on flying and trying to land on top of feeder and waterer.

The barred rocks so far are super chill. They love the little perch I put on the brooder. You should definitely try to add them next year if you can?
