New Chicken Mama

Welcome :frow I too am fairly new to the chicken experience. We would love to see pictures of your coop fortress! What breed of chickens are you getting?

We have two dogs. The little papipoo (Papillion/poodle) chased one of our chickens once. She got in big trouble from me (the boss). Now she knows that is not allowed and is actually reluctant to even go near them even though the chicken never pecked her or anything. Also, she is very small. 😁 Our other dog however, is a young German shepherd. I don't know that I would ever let her near the chickens without being on a lead :barnie.
Hopefully you will have better luck with your Golden retriever. They are usually fairly calm dogs but they are all individuals.

Sorry I'm late:

@Mother Hen 11 - Welcome to BYC and we are so glad to have you! I think you'll find alot of great tips here for your chickens and their care. I highly suggest your chicken fortress has a NEST cam or game camera placed outside to keep an eye on any potential predators.

As for dogs x poultry, maybe also give the sister site BackYard Herds a look and ask some folks who raise livestock guardian dogs as well!

What a great organization! I live in Evergreen, Colorado and have just finished our fortress of a chicken coop. We pick up 8 10 week old chickens within the week. I've read several chicken books and watched tons of video clips but have not come across anything regarding the best way to introduce a family dog to the chickens. We have a very gentle 2 year old male Golden Retriever. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance!!
