New Chicken Mommy

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Brand new! I just got my first 10 Rhode Island Red females yesterday.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I started with 10 but I have lost 3 already and I'm not sure why. :hit

(3) What breeds do you have?

Rhode Island Reds

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

Since I'm new, I don't know yet. I do know that losing them is heart breaking.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

II love making art. From mixed media, to watercolors, to digital art in Photoshop and ProCreate. I also, after building my first coop, have fallen in love with wood working. I grew up watching my dad build the most beautiful pieces as a kid.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I have been married for 16 years and have two grown boys. One is 24 and serving in the US Navy and the other is 21 and going to college. I work in ITS as a GIS Specialist and absolutely live my field. I ended up being adopted by a rooster who I have really enjoyed over the last year even though he is pretty skittish. A friend at work convinced me to start raising chicks, not only for the eggs, but so my Rooster, Colonel Sanders (giggle!) could have some girlfriends to take care of. The soccer ball in my next door neighbors yard doesn't seem to be satisfying him, despite his best attempts. Lol!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I have landed on this forum many times since I started my quest to learn about raising chickens so now that I have my first little flock, I thought I'd go ahead and jump into the fray so I can meet fellow chicken owners and learn more about raising them well.
Hi! Welcome to the chicken club.
I'm so brand new to the site that I haven't even introduced myself yet LOL. Saw your post and we also did mail order chicks and have lost 10 of 27 within 24 hours. It is sad but we did all we could. Looking forward to watching the strong survivors grow and ordering "fancy" replacements. My favorite chicken ever 20 years ago was a RIRed named Scarlett. We'd let her in the house, the Labradors got along with her, and she would come running when called! :)

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
If your chicks were shipped, they likely died from shipping stress. Shipping chicks during temperature extremes only compounds that stress.
I would offer them some Poultry Nutri-drench in their water for the next three days. You can also make a mash out of their chick starter and put PND in there instead and leave them with fresh clean on the side.
Make sure to keep their bedding clean and dry and that they have lots of fresh air.
I brooded my last batch in the built-in brooder in my coop with a brooder plate in mid-spring. They experienced several nights below freezing but still thrived.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Heating plates are not enough to keep them warm. You need to either use a heat lamp or a chick brooder/electric hen style set up. They are probably chilling and dying. I am super sorry
:hugs

Good luck with the others and welcome to our community!
