New chicken nerd alert!

Thanks everyone! You're all making me feel very welcome!

If anyone is interested, I recently used a 3D model maker of a shed manufacturer to more or less design what I'm going for. View attachment 2990451
I really really love the idea of a covered porch. I want to place the coop inside my future veggie garden and give them a chicken moat to run around in as well as a regular run. The thought of just sitting on my little porch with a drink after some gardening just watching the chickens... divine.

The front view, the left door would lead to a little storage area and have a door to enter the chicken area. The right door is for easy access to the chicken area for cleaning. I'd like the windows to open, not sure if I'd prefer them to slide up or... The program wouldn't let me put all the details in as I wanted, but this is more or less the placement of things

On this side I want a little pop door to open up to a small run for a brooder

The window on the right is too big and the one on the left too high, but it wouldn't let me change it.. oh well

The window is again too high. The idea is that the chickens can roost all along the windows and look outside. It would need to be lowered just a bit to make it all fit the way I want it to. Also on this side there would be a pop door opening up to the main run which will give access to the chicken moat.

The dimensions are a little bigger than I would need, but again I had to work with what the program would let me do. It's close enough though.

welcome!

the dimensions might not be big enough. you will learn about chicken math, lol.

Top hinge the windows and back them with 1/2" hardware cloth to secure the coop.
I would add gable vents and a ridge vent too that are permanently open.
The windows are not too big. I would leave them that size.

HELLO
You could build the coop on stilts plant shade vegs under it. Place vegetable cages around the veggies. Cats and chickens can get along. Meet my Intruder a feral kitten that moved in with my chickens ( have tried to get rid of her). The first photo is when my chickens first got their pet.The second one is her today.

They get along and share everything.
The chicken manure will be good for your vegetables also..... just saying lol.

I have heard about the dreaded chicken math haha

But you think a coop with a 3,5 by 2 meter surface won't be big enough? (that's 11,5 by 6,5 feet according to google) I was hoping to build a coop big enough to survive a few years of " Oh only a few more.." :p

Hello everyone!

I'm very excited to be here, I've been creepily reading along on this forum for a few weeks now, but finally decided I should just register and become a full fledged (pun intended) member! I'm from the Netherlands and live in the northernmost province of Groningen.

I don't have any chickens of my own yet, sadly we don't have the space. I have a pretty decent backyard, but a large part of it is already take up by my veggie patch and the whole thing is fenced in to give my indoor cats some safe and supervised outside time. With all of that there isn't much room to give any chickens their own space, at least not as much as I think they should have. So for now I'm just dreaming. But hopefully somewhere in the next two-ish years we will be able to move to a place with a lot more space and then, and THEN! THEN THERE SHALL BE CHICKENS!

Until then I enjoy reading about them and thinking about what breeds I'd want and designing my dream coop. I love looking at coop builds on here and they've already given me so much inspiration.
As for breeds, there are a few I really love. First off I adore Croad Langshans. As soon as I learned about them I knew I had to have some. Beautiful big black cuddlebugs who lay pinkish eggs, what's not to love?
I'm also mad for Black Copper Marans, they're just gorgeous and I love their egg colour.
Orpingtons are another favourite, both the buff and the lavender are birds I'd love to own one day.
And I've got a bit of a soft spot for Araucanas and Ameraucanas. The silly little tufts make me laugh and I'm a sucker for coloured eggs so...

In my Ultimate Chicken Fantasy my flock starts with two Croads, two BCMs, one or two Orpingtons and two Araucana/Ameraucana (one laying blue and one laying green), plus a Croad roo because they're so pretty and sweet. And then each year I hope to hatch a few eggs and try to chase that egg rainbow 😋
I'm pretty obsessed with egg colour genetics and especially blooms. I'd love to try and select for heavy bloom layers.

Other breeds I love are:
Cream Legbar
Welsumer
Barnevelder
Isbar
Wyandottes
Sussex
Orloff
Faverolles
and several rare Dutch (and German) breeds like Lakenvelder, Vorwerk and Groninger Meeuw (as someone who lives in Groningen I kinda feel like I should have at least one, right?)

Other than chickens, I love horses. I'm a real horse girl. In the future I hope to have space for a horse or two close to home. I'm a real sucker for Arabians ever since I first started riding them and they've really stolen my heart. I love all horses, but dream of one day owning my own little grey arabian mare. :love

I do a lot of sewing, I'm currently setting up a teaching business (has covid made that difficult you ask? Nooooo, not at aallllllll...)
Other hobbies include crochet, (vegetable) gardening, baking, drawing and painting, embroidery, hiking and many more

As you can tell I'm a bit of a blabbermouth, but that's the excitement talking ( and there's a lot of that, so I talk a lot :duc)

It's really great to meet everyone and I'm looking forward to all the chickeny fun around here! :)
Welcome to BYC you picked a great community to learn from so ask away

in a real life less than 10 chickens would be too much for 7 sm. considering they have a big run all day long. too much poop can cause health issues and I guess you already have too many things to do besides cleaning the coop. in my experience dirt floor is the best. only make sure it is protected from the outside so that no predator can dig and enter.
