Hi, I'm Cherry and I am new to this site. I have found lots of information to help me learn about my girls.
I have a mixed flock, we have 8, 5 month old birds, 18, 7 week olds, 2 ducks and 2 turkeys that are about the same age as the babies. All the babies get along great and are thriving right along. Been feeding the babies a mixture of non med chick starter and wild game feed cause of the turkeys and ducks. Starting them today on a mix of chicken feed and all flock so I am not buying all kinds of different feed for bigs and littles and they are all eating the same food. There is a bit of background and now for my question.
When my hens start laying do I have to feed them laying pellets or would it be ok to put out some oyster shell in the feed and be good to go?

Not certain but, think you can put layers etc, on "grower feed," and have a container of free choice crushed oyster shell which only the laying hens would have an interest in.

I'm sure others will have more to say.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I agree with Drumstick on that they can all have the flock raiser as long as you provide oyster shell on the side for the laying hens. Please do pop by the learning Center ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center There is a great section feeding your flock in there.

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

Hey Cherry, welcome to BYC! I hope you enjoy your stay here - I'm sure that you will. :D Cya around.

You do not ever need to feed layer feed. They can all eat a grower, all flock, or game feed. Nothing wrong with feeding everyone the same thing, as long as the overall protein content of the feed is at least 18%. Offer crushed oyster shell separately. Those that need it, will eat it. Those that don't will leave it alone.
