Hello everyone, My name is Devin and my husband Scott and I are diving into the world of backyard chickens! We have 3 kids at home, a 3.5 yr old, a 4 yr old, and a 10 yr old.
We are new to owning chickens, though not completely new to caring for them as we have family close by whose chickens we care for when they go out of town. We will be getting 10 Black Australorp chicks on Thursday (5/21) and will end up keeping 7 of them (we are rehoming 3 due to number restrictions for our area. We are looking forward to the animal care aspect of raising chickens in respect to teaching responsibility to our children as well as general pet ownership and, of course, the benefit of eggs later on. As a family we enjoy being outdoors, hiking, fishing, and general exploring. We also enjoy attempting and failing to grow various things in our yard - we have yet to plant anything we have actually been able to harvest due to a lack of prolonged sunlight in any one area of our yard.
I have been ingesting all the chicken knowledge I possibly can over the last month or so and this sight has definitely been a go to. And, someone on here totally validated my idea for using our packnplay as a brooder! Testing out our heat lamp today for temp while I wait for our heat plate to come in.
