Hi all, My family and I have been raising 3 chickens since July 2017 when they became feathered enough to sleep outside. Cheryl is a Buff Orpington, Cindy, a Speckled Sussex and Charlotte is an Australorp. The Speckled Sussex and Australorp just recently got their combs and waddles (is that the scientific term? haha) while the Buff Orpington is still growing hers out. We had our first 2 eggs- one this past Sunday and another today! I think it was the Speckled Sussex as she was very vocal the past two days and when I try to pick her up she crouches down in submission. We let them free range while supervised and they are happy and getting fat. Our rescue dog, Mollie, is a great guard dog. She barks when hawks fly overhead and the chickens run to her if close by or will hide under a bush until danger has passed. It amazes us everyday how smart they are and we love watching them do their thing. Thanks for having such a great forum for chicken newbies!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

:welcome

Congrats on getting the first eggs! That's great your dog is protective of the girls, sure makes it easier than when the family dog is anti-chicken :)

Make yourself at home here, it's nice you joined us!
