So I have a male friend who had been thinking about getting chickens for about a year ever since I began my chicken adventure.
He got his 1st group of fuzzy butts yesterday. 4 Silkies and 2 Cochins.
I made sure his brooder was set up correctly and food and water ready.
2 hours ago, I get a phone call from him all upset about 1 silkie who , by the way he described her little butt as " caked up ", I figured the chick has pasty butt.
Since he lives only 10 minutes from me, I grabbed my Plain Yogurt and went on over.
Yep, the baby had pasty butt. So, I gave him a crash course on clearing up pasty butt using warm water and a cloth .
So, the baby's butt is clear and as I was leaving, I gave him the little cup of yogurt I brought.
I told him that plain yogurt is a great way to prevent pasty butt.
I bid him farewell and left. I wasnt home 10 minutes when my cell rang .
Yep, it was my friend .
The following conversation occured :
" Hey, just wanted to say " Thanks " again. "
" Oh youre welcome. I just love those little chicks. Youll do fine. "
" Well, I appreciate your encouragement , but I do have 1 question though.."
" Ok, whats up ?"
" So, how long am I supposed to leave the Yogurt on their butts "???
" Oh noooo... Its for them to eat in a little bowl, it DOES NOT go ON them "
" Oh crap..gotta go before it hardens anymore..see ya"
I laughed for quite awhile.
