Ok so I think BYC wants me to write an intro for myself so here goes:

Me and my husband just bought an acreage outside Coalhurst, AB, Canada. For an acreage warming present my friend brought me a 4mth old super tame rooster we have named Russell Crow who appears to be mainly Americauna. We are in the process of building a 6x8' run accessed from our 5x6' shed that I have claimed for a coop. I have arranged to pick up about 5 females from a reputable breeder next weekend and can get Isabrown hens, light Sussex, Wyandotte, & Americauna. We currently have 2 large dogs, 2 indoor and 4 outdoor cats, & 1 horse. Any tips on coop/run building, feeding, etc are greatly appreciated!

Welcome to BYC. With your rooster make sure you are always boss. Make him move out of your way when you walk by. They become a bit territorial when they get older specially if the hens are around. If your shed is a wooden shed you can turn it into a small coop. Just cut some windows in it and put in hardware cloth. Put some ventilation at the top of the coop covered by more hardware cloth. Few perches and nesting boxes and door to let them into the run. Your 5x6 shed is 30 square feet and would hold 6 chickens fine. Give each chicken about 5 feet of room in the coop. 10 feet in the run per bird. To start out with you need crumble with is a starter feed for chicks. As well as some kind of watering system. Bucket with nipples on it would be fine so it could hang. Less mess. We sure don't want bears or anything to get in there. Best of luck.
