I made the decision to buy chickens and prior to doing so I spent hours trolling the internet for answers. Most of the time it came back to backyard chickens. I have questions and decided this is the place to get the answers. I have 6 chickens that are 3 weeks old. I owe lots of credit to you guys because I have taken advice from several sources to come up with my design. I am getting to the end and had a few questions I hope somebody can help me with.

I live in northern Ohio and it gets pretty cold in the winter. Sometimes below zero for several days in a row. I have some insulation in the basement and was wondering if I should insulate the coop or would that keep it too warm for them?

I have read a lot about ventilation. I was going to put soffetts in and was considering using the ones with the vent holes in them. Is that good or would you be concerned that it would be too cold in the coop with that much ventilation? I do not have electricity out to the coop.

Thanks for the help and looking forward to the conversations

Welcome. Glad you joined our flock. I can't help much on the cold weather, I live in Texas. If you got your information from this site, I'm sure your birds will be just fine. Lots of great experienced peeps on here, so just ask away.

Chickens tolerate cold MUCH better than heat. You may want to post on the coops section in regard to building a draft free coop that still has adequate ventilation.

Good morning, welcome to BYC!

Drumstick Diva has pointed you in the right direction. Ventilation will take a higher priority than providing warmth.

Good luck with your flock.

It's nice to have you here!

A buildup of humidity will cause frostbite worse than dry cold can. Just as long as there isn't a direct breeze. Keep the walls solid and vent the top and bottom. Have windows or something you can open to keep the coop cool in the summer.
You will want to run an extension cord or something so you can keep their water unfrozen. Changing it twice a day is no fun.

Welcome!!
