Thank for the welcome. I am new to chickens but am learning fast this site helps a lot. I do have a question. I was wondering when I could expect my BLRW and my speckled sussex hens to start laying they are all twenty weeks old and was wondering should I start watching for eggs from them like I've been told to do with the Australorp hen I have?

Hi I was wondering if anyone could give me some advise? I have nine hens that are very close to laying I think. Today I noticed for the first time that our rooster is mounting our girls or at least trying. one of them stood for his antics the other one won't tolerate him. I was told not to open the hen boxes until after I find our first egg but after today with our Henry doing his deed or atlas trying I wonder if I should just go ahead an open up the boxes and start putting some fake egg in the boxes? thanks

I had mine open with fake eggs in anticipation of eggs months early!..

How old are they what breed? With spring coming and longer days they should start soon. If they are 20-25 weeks.

Hi thanks for that help. they are a mix of breeds. I have one each easter egger astraulorp and BLRW along with two Light-brown leghorns, two speckled sussex's and two Blue Andalusians. They are all 21 weeks old and I have not opened the boxes up yet. I was waiting until they laid an egg a of yet no eggs but from what I'm hearing everyone say I guess I need to get them opened up right away,.
