Hello everybody! My name is Cheryl and I have finally joined the BYC community. I got 5 Golden Comets and a little coop for Mother's Day this year (total surprise from my kids) and that's how I got introduced to the world of chickens. I've been checking out this site for months, learning so much. Every time I had a question and searched it, BYC would come up with the answers. So much great information and encouragement on here. So, I've had 5 chickens since May, and just lost one to a hawk on the December 23rd. Never knew I would cry so much over losing a chicken :-( But seeing the sadness, my children snuck off and got two new chickens, a barred rock and black sexlink. It's started a brand new phase to my chicken adventure. Of course I had no idea about introducing new chickens to the group so I'm sure I did every thing wrong that I could. Turns out the barred rock seems to be sick so I have since quarantined her to try to figure it out. The farmer that she came from said to bring her back and he would switch her out, but I just don't have the heart. I'm afraid he might just kill her. I've put a stream on her asking for any advise so we will just see how it works out. I have two teenage daughters and one has a boyfriend who is part of the family. He built the original coop and they were the start of this new obsession. During the normal day, I am an assistant teacher in 5th grade. My kids love to hear about my chickens and think it's funny when I bring in cartoons of eggs. Thanks for all the kindness and encouragement and advise on this site.

G’Day from down under Cheryl :frow Welcome!

I am so sorry to hear of your loss to a Hawk. I too cry like a baby whenever I lose one of my much loved gals. I am also sorry that one of your girls may be unwell and hope that the folks on the ER Forum are able to help her and you.

I also hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Thank you! So nice to hear from you. Are you really in Australia?! That is so cool. I would love to visit there one day. I love this site and you are right, so much good information on here. Thanks for the tip about finding my state thread, I didn't know about that. I will check it out. :love

You are welcome; nice to meet you also. Yep, guilty as charged, I am an Aussie. However, "cool" is not a word we are using much at present :p 91.5F predicted for today :sick

Wow! It was 47 here in Georgia today, sunny so I can't complain. I hit the reply inside the message for this message but do you know if i should do that or enter it into the reply box below?

Welcome to the BYC Cheryl . Sorry for you loss . :hugsSounds like you have awesome children . You should be prepared for the hawk to return . I assure you it will . Keep your birds in a covered run when you aren't there to watch over them . Hope your sick chicken gets better :fl
Thanks so much. Yes, we have been on the watch for the hawk. It came back the same day it killed Cinnamon but haven't seen it since. The girls were getting to free roam for most of the days weather permitting so they are not happy about having to stay in the pen so much. What kind of chickens do you have?
It looks like you did it correctly to me :)
So doing it this way just replies back to you? I'm assuming do it the other way post to the public thread?

No, everyone who reads this thread can see all our comments. 'Quote' gives you the ability to quote multiple posts in one reply as you have done above. Selecting 'Reply' on a person's post allows you to reply to them directly, as we have been doing, but they are still visible to all. It just gives you the ability to reply to one person's quote which comes in handy sometimes in a busy thread with many posts. The person you have replied to will get an alert, even if they have not chosen to watch the thread.

Replying to the thread in general [further down] allows you to reply without notifying anyone in particular. As I did on my initial response to you.

I hope my explanation makes sense :)

Got it! That makes sense. I just didn't want to be posting so much and getting obnoxious to the whole thread. I told my daughter I was talking to someone in Australia about chickens and she is all set to plan a trip!
