Previously we had chicks my girls raised in 4-H - mostly frizzles and Cochins. It’s been quite a few years since we purchased any chicks. We had one bantam hen left which is around ten years old. Wanting fresh eggs again, I purchased 4 from our local store and 5 online from McMurray Hatchery which we have always used choosing breeds that were friendly but good egg layers. Since they are three weeks apart, we just put the six week old chicks outside in the pen with the others. It seems to be going well. Someone suggested a huddle box, so I moved their box out to a corner inside the pen where they congregate as their safe place at different times.

Welcome back to the flock life! Sounds like you’re building a nice crew with a good mix of breeds. Love the idea of a huddle box - a little safe zone for the chicks is pure genius. Glad to hear everyone’s settling in well. Keep us posted on your fresh egg adventure! (And ten years old is a good age! You're doing everything right!)

Hi! AZ mountain dweller over here. I just restarted my flock this year too. 9 BYM hatched from eggs I was given by my Aunt(banty, silky, Cochin, and whatever else was roaming around), 4 EE, 2 Cinnamon Queen, and 2 Blue laced gold wyandottes. So far they all get along really well.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

It's surprising when chicks are young, like under 12 weeks old or so, you can usually safely put them together at any age with the only issue being the larger ones stepping on the littler ones. :) We do it all the time here having three brooders full of chicks, eggs hatching, some I'm growing out, etc. I'm just careful with the ones only a few days old. I let them get a little stronger so they can run faster.

We're glad you're here!
