That's my wife's handle on us, city dwelling rednecks. She's the light of my life and a born n breed Tampa Florida girl. I'm a transplant from parts near and far, last place being El Paso, Tex. We just got 4 lovely little girls, Marilyn, Thumbelina, Norma and Jean. (buff orpington, speckled sussex and two light sussex babes- 'cept for Thumbelina, all 4 weeks old, Thumb's 3 weeks old. Cute a can be all 4 of them and I'm wrapped around their little...fingers?
I've been checking forums for answers to questions since it's been near on 2 decades since I had to care for chickens and I'm a little rusty. Now that the girls are 4 and 3 full weeks old and near to move to bigger and better accommodations, I wanted to say a big THANKS for unknowingly helping out. So...
THANKS for advice on what to get before the babies came home. Brooder set up information. On what to feed and how to get the brats back on feed after me and mommy chick spoiled them on meal worms and other tasty snacks and they started holding out for the good stuff. For reminding me to check their little pooters, water intake, and everything else.
This deal is a blessing! Hope to get to know y'all better!

So glad you joined the Backyard chickens flock -

Love your post! Welcome, welcome!! I'm looking forward to you and Baby Chick Momma sharing more experiences.

The age of your chicks reminds me of my only regret -- not handling my darlings more. When I had them from 2-3 days up until turning them loose, I felt badly that I was creating a panic among them by reaching for them. They'd scatter, screech, basically wig and wing out. So, I chickened out. And had to wait until they started laying eggs (and assuming the submissive crouch position) before I could pick them up without each suffering a "Help! Predator!" attack.

Would love advice on how to gentle chicks from the beginning and lift them past that initial "fright/flee" reaction.

It had me buffaloed!!

Dawg? Others?

Chicken whispering advice?
