how nice to hear from you , sorry i am missing all the fun.
the wind came up with rain in it last night, checked on the girls at 530 am , nice and toasty , but not roasty.
have a nice holiday , am on my way to work , high ho....

I've seen you mention several times that your first batch turned out to be all roo's. A question: did the feed store sell them as straight run or sexed? Just seems crazy how that happened!

and my second batch too!
I am looking at butts really close these days considering its not guys in tights on bikes!
I saw two types of butts tonight in the pen, small and biggger, only one week old, suspense is killing me.
one is from a different lot , I know it, and I know he is a roo.
He screams a lot and stays away from the others and rushes them ,, looks a lot like one of my last roos... yes I am paranoid.......
if I have two roos I will order from pet chiciken and get two banties, plus a buff orp .
I am getting very tired of my nice, causual feedstore men. who don't give a darn.....

all four are still alive and happy in their coop, cold today , nasty wind, had to leave the tarp in front up most of the day until the evening, checked on them every two hours during the day so they were not to cold or hot.
the am should be warmer, 80 , then I can leave the front down for more sun light.
bouncing around growing and pooping!
eggs are just a fanatsy.....

Well got nervous about the two more aggreessive chciks with different feathers, stopped at another feed store ,and he had Buff Orps, cool, so he gave me a feather lesson.... super cool.
went home with a buff and a barred rock, now 6 chicks in a coop for three or four, hmmmm
Sat down and compared wings to the new girl, (all the same age, a week).
well darn, the two I had that I had doubts about had different feathers.
when I put all the girls together in the coop all was calm, when I put those two back in they ran around pecking everyone......
so I put them in a box, took them to feed store number two.... man walked in looking for buff roos!
had them checked by the chciken man, yess they were boys!
gave them to the man, bought another barred rock because my mom liked the first one......

now have five in the coop, three most likely girls from store 1, one buff two barreds from store 2, that have a higher probability of being girls.

they appear quiet and calm togther from the start.
so good!

the new ones are not as hardy , mine have been out with less heat in the coop, today is 80, pen in shade, so iturned the heat lamp back on for a few hours.
they have eaten and reallly want a long nap,,,,
which i agree with . off for a nap.....

Kells is in heaven with black chcik to guard, she can really see these.
feed store man agreed, some hatcheries are much better than others for temprement and sexing.

So sorry about your luck. That must stink! At least you caught it sooner this time, and I'm really happy to hear how it worked out for your little roo chicks!


And I agree, what'd the man have to say? I have 2wk olds.. and practically have the group under a microscope!

I'm so glad the feed store I frequent only stocks sexed chicks!

That would be stressful, since I cannot keep roosters (as much as I would love one!).

I have learned alot about sexing chicks by wing feathers!
of the last four I bought a week ago, 2 were boys, longer feathers on the wing ends, wish i had taken a pic with the camera!
girl wing ends, the flight feather is smaller,
when you have them side by side it was easy to see. these chiks were one week old.
the two boys were already more pushy , when i put a new chcick in they just went crasy.
now I have what i think is all girls, three buffs, and two barred rock, feed store number two helped me sort them out.
all these chcicks were sold as sexed, but the store 2 said some outfits are more reputable than others,
he gets his chicks from Privets?
all five have been peaceful all evening, no stress at all.
but i built my coop/inside run for three, hmmm........

I am learning fast!!!
