New Chicks

I like the way you think!

BTW, there are miniature sheep breeds out there. I used to keep my miniature goats in the backyard when I lived in town.

Sounds like you will have some lovely egg baskets in the coming months with the breeds you've chosen.

Welcome to BYC; It's good to meet you! Glad you finally joined and started following your heart.
We have a *really* small back yard and no green space at this point, so even stealth mini sheep are off the table. Fortunately, we have a nice, quiet space behind our shed that is currently unused and is just the right size for a chicken coop, and I can take out one garden bed and add the run. I have been thinking about this for waaaay too long.

Thanks all for the warm welcome =D
I am already dealing with my first chicken emergency. One of the chickies has a very pasty butt. I cleaned it up yesterday, but it is back today 😒
What heat source are you using?
Pasty butt is usually caused by a hot brooder with poor air circulation. Ideally, you want the feed/water end of the brooder to be as cool as ambient temperatures. The chicks run back and forth to the food/water then the heat source.
I've brooded chicks outside in the coop in NY spring when the night time temps dipped down to 23. I went out in the morning to a bunch of happy fluffy chicks zipping all over the place while I could see my breath. I was using a brooder plate with a towel tossed over it for the heat source so when the chicks were not under there, they were in 23F degree temps and positively thrived.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am brand new. I got my chicks yesterday.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have four, and I am stealthily considering increasing that number to six while my spouse is not paying attention :p:p

(3) What breeds do you have?
Easter Egger, Olive Egger, Rhode Island Red, and Cuckoo Maran

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I am looking forward to fresh eggs, and having company in the back yard while I am gardening. They will be in a run.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I am an avid knitter and spinner. If my yard was a lot bigger, I would probably also have backyard sheep ;)

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We are a family of 6 humans, kids are 5-16 and we are homeschoolers. I have decided that this term, we will be learning about chickens. We have 4 cats, an angora rabbit, and two newts.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I have been reading articles off and on for about 6 years as I was contemplating getting hens. I kept waiting for us to have a larger space, and this year with the housing market being what it is, and us not getting any closer to getting more property, I decided that I would sacrifice a bit of my garden space for hens and get a plot at the community garden.
Welcome you home schooler you! What a great learning experience for your kiddos. Good luck on the stealth adding. :thumbsup
