Shotgun Ranch is three-year-old ranch on the eastern plains of Colorado specializing in heritage breeds of livestock. We're home to six head of Texas longhorn cattle; 27 chickens including Rhode Island red, buff brahma, white-crested black Polish, silver-lace Polish, easter eggers and silkies; and 13 heritage turkey poults. We finally joined this web site because google sends us here every time we search for information.

Hi and welcome to BYC! Sounds like you have a nice flock! Thanks for joining us!

We enjoy the chickens, but the reds and brahmas are better than two years old and egg production has slowed down dramatically. We'll be culling heavily this fall and bringing in some rocks and maybe more reds in the spring. If I can keep the local stray cat away from the turkeys, we'll be increasing the flock in the spring.

I'm not convinced it's the heat. They started slowing down before it got really hot and last summer (when we had more 100-degree days) we were getting about 5 dozen eggs a week from our 10 hens. This summer we're only getting about 2 dozen.
