Sigh. Two hatches down and no chicks yet. Third hatch attempt is in the brooder now with bumped up temperatures on the incubator by .5 degrees and personally collected the eggs instead of letting them come by mail. If all goes well they should arrive around June 1. I will be sorely put out if this hatch also fails. But, I've got a broody sitting on her own eggs. She should be hatching them out around May 24 with any luck.

They are absolutely friggin' adorable true bantams, incredibly rare and would try to hatch a rock if you let them. Great broody birds. This picture is from Livestock Conservancy.

I don't know about trying to hatch a rock ... but I did have one that gave the all-out "College Try" to a golf ball! :D

1. Had to be available in the United States prior to 1863
2. Had to be an endangered breed in need of conservation according to the Livestock Conservancy
3. Had to be a breed that my children could easily care for, IE, not flighty or have a tendency toward meanness.

I've done a few experiments and made a concession to my children that they could have their own hand picked chickens which would be treated as pets.

My focus breeds are:

Black Java
Red Dorkings

The other assorted members of my (non breeding) flock are Silver Grey Dorkings, Domoniques, Buff Cochins, and my children's pets, an Ameraucana and a Rhode Island Red.

We have an 18 acre farm and are beginning to breed in earnest this year, hatching our first batch of eggs as I type.

Hi there and welcome. I'm kind of attempting to do the a similar thing. I'm trying to breed Araucana. It's not going so well at the moment. I had 4 in my flock, and only one is left alive. I'm waiting on 9 hatching eggs.

What does the watching category on the livestock conservancy mean? I see Araucana are listed under that category, but you can't click on it to read about them.

Watch: Fewer than 5,000 breeding birds in the United States, with ten or fewer primary breeding flocks, and estimated global population less than 10,000. Also included are breeds with genetic or numerical concerns or limited geographic distribution.
