New coop and run

It's looking great! As to your question about lime, it kills odors and keeps the floor dry. I've used it in my horses stalls forever but I use DE for the chickens.

Nice quality coop, and sturdy large run.Great job.

Are you building the entire run with straps? Does it give it more strength?

Cute coop. It'll be a nice set up once you're finished.

We used a variety of Simpson strong ties (straps) to put it together. The 2x6's (upper and lower) are all attached with the straps. We essentially built floating walls using 2x4's that fit between the 2x6's and attached the upper and lower 2x4 (which fit snugly against the 2x6's) to the 4x4 posts using Simpson brackets (and also screwed them into the 2x6's using coated deck screws). The vertical 2x4's (which will be used to attach the hardware cloth) are put in place using coated deck screws.

The joists (running from the front to back of the run) for the roof are attached using Simpson brackets (and are also supported by the 2x4'x). The pieces of 2x6 between the joists are screwed using the deck screws.

The whole structure is VERY sturdy. My 20 year old (6 foot tall) son was on the roof attaching the Ondura panels and I couldn't even see the thing move while he was on it.

I've been taking photos of the whole process and may try to put a "how we did it" page together when its done. I tried finding something like that before I started, but really never found anything that went into the detail that I was looking for (remember I noted that I'm a computer guy that gets paralyized when confronted with a construction project....

We finally finished building our chicken run and we now have 6 red star hens running around in the run...

I created a page that has lots more photos on how we did the build. You can see it by visiting my page here on byc...
I need to get one more photo (one that shows the whole setup), but all of the detail shots are on the page...
