I was becoming more and more frustrated with my small, poorly designed coop. My partner and I had planned a 2 and a half week road trip (it was gonna be so much fun) but felt like we couldn't leave the evening chicken duties to our regular "pet sitter" because it was such an ordeal getting them onto their roosts every night so we ditched our vacation dream and started building a new coop instead.

Here's what we came up with...

This is almost as fun as an epic road trip, right?

So it's almost a month since we started building and it's not quite done yet. Trim on windows, gutter on roof, wiring for electricity...We'll be installing an automatic chicken door soon. But the chickens spent their first night in the coop and it was very exciting! The best part.. last night (night #2) the girls filed in at dusk, hopped up on their roosts and settled in!! Well that was easy (sort of). And this morning Bertie laid an egg in the new nest box. This will be life changing for us all and some day I WILL go on a vacation.

Very nice!
Are you closing off the area under the roof front and back with 1/2" hardware cloth?

Yep. The whole top is hardware cloth under the roof. It’s a lot of ventilation and I might wind up blocking it off a bit more if it’s too drafty but it’s totally predator proof. Thanks for checking though. Safety first!

Fantastic job! So happy to see big windows and lots of ventilation, and it sounds like the chickens approve.

Me, personally, I'd take a nice coop over a vacation any day.
Well it’s a good thing cause with the way the world is right now a new coop might be the only thing worth getting! Lol
