New coop.. new chicks.. two old hens...

I got the Amber Links and Black Sex Links March 11...the blacks were already well on their way tho they told me they were a week old... the ISA Browns I got March 22 and was told they were alittle over one week...I can try to shut the heat down in that room, and open window. The Black ones are totally ready to go... the others need a week or so yet I think? Will they still be ok if I put the black ones out first? Like a week apart? Thx so much for the help... nervous mama here
OMGosh your avatar is hilarious!!

I'd keep them all together.
Here's another idea:
Make them a 'huddle box',(you might have to 'persuade' them to use it) then move it out to the coop with them.

Cardboard box with a bottom a little bigger than what they need to cuddle next to each other without piling and tall enough for them to stand in.

Cut an opening on one side a couple inches from bottom and big enough for 2-3 of them to go thru at once.

Fill the bottom with some pine shavings an inch or so deep.

This will give them a cozy place to sleep/rest, block any drafts and help hold their body heat in.

Ok! On the mission for a box lol sheesh... these little bugger are sucking the life outta me lol and a new foster puppy on the way up from Georgia for Saturday arrival.. I must be nuts! I’ll post back with how it goes.. yes keeping them together makes more sense to me too.. thx so much! The avatar is my chubby labby boy ❤️

Chicks are labor intensive without good space...and there is a learning curve.

Lab in a 'Litter Box' :D

Hiya Jerzy, just for references sake I have chicks who just now turned 4 weeks old and they have been outside for over 2 weeks. Now I live in TN not NJ but it was 29 here last night. I do have a huddle box in the coop and just now about to take away their MHP(heating pad) but it's been on the lowest possible setting for over a week. Hope all goes well with your new girls:thumbsup.

Hi TomZilla! We are moving to Greeneville TN very soon! Yes my neighbors on the farm across the street called Monday and said it’s been soooo cold and very wet ... I’m finishing the coop prep and now looking for a good size box which I will make them a huddle box also. This coop will be my test design for the coop I build there... which will now include brooder boxes built in!

One of the members here makes 5x7" openings in her wire that the chicks can go through into the bigger hens area but still escape back to their side safely. I am going to do that in my run this year. I thought it sounded like a great idea. I believe she posted how to and pictures, but I cannot remember who! Will try to find it... think it was in the big Mama's heating pad thread...

That was probably @azygous .....I found 5x7 to be too big for my slimline hens.

I have a temp wall up .. very secure floor to ceiling... chicks one side, Laverne n Shirley on the other... they can see but not touch... old hens have access to run.. Little’s only coop access for first week or so .. until there is harmony

Yup, it's been a pretty cold winter for us southerners:lau( hears the northern folks snicker), and now it seems the rain just won't stop but it's all good I guess:D. Welcome to Tennessee, I think it's a lovely place. Hope you enjoy your new home:frow

I really liked a one way gate for my chicks last year. Will be setting it up soon. Have chicks coming Friday, in a blizzard. Hope I can get to town by Saturday.
