New coop project

6 years later & it is! Thank you for posting 🙂
I just found this thread at the end of 2025 and it is giving me ideas. I have to laugh because all I was looking for is what screws and washers to use for securing hardware cloth.
I am planning on building a big chicken run and while I already had a basic plan in my head, this definitely has elements I will incorporate into my build.

1/4" crown staples are the way to go
I disagree. Deck screws and metal washers are much better. I've used staples in the past and they did not hold that well over the long term.
I ended up using 1 1/2" torx deck screws and metal washers, to secure the hardware cloth and plywood, when building my brooder for chicks once they hit 2 weeks.

Mr. Rocky Raccoon can try to break into it all he wants but unless he has a drill and the right bit, he's going to be nothing but a frustrated observer.

ok, but I work smart not hard....I used crown staples on the hardware cloth on my three aviaries over 20 years and all is well......
Success often varies by predator load.

As to the smart vs hard bit, I can testify that an impact driver pushing a deck screw through a fender washer into wood takes maybe 15 seconds, without nearly the wrist-arm fatigue from a hammer and staples.
