New coop run - currently yard grass - what should we do ?

They will revamp if the need arises. We tried one way but after rethinking the setup, we rebuilt new coops with a run and it is easier to clean and it is a more practical setup for them. Then the rains came and came and came. So now the run will be modified with a drainage pipe and deep litter.

Thank you!! I was wondering why someone would spend time looking at photoshop pics of another poster’s coop just to try to prove a point rather than helping them by offering advice on their question. Anyhoos... I live in OK and after our extremely rainy spring, I asked about sand vs. deep litter and after reading the experiences from others, have started bugging hubby to mow again to get the deep litter method started. Lol last spring, we disposed of so many bags of leaves and clippings that now I am kicking myself!!!
We are in FL so we probably will go with pine nuggets over the grass because sand is our natural soil. We have lots of rain and grass growing up through the pine nugget mulch will happen. Probably the best option here! :)

we have tons of cedar trees so no use to my chooks there. So will have to go to the forested portion of the property to get proper leaves. Ours will probably consist of grass, twigs anf whatever leaves we can get with a touch of straw.

We just had new coop put in and babies will go in a few months from now. What should we do for the run after the chickens dig up all the grass? We are in FL. Hot and humid. So sand is natural dirt. Thinking of adding mulch or just crushed up river rock? Or sand? Not wanting to do deep litter method. Any thoughts are appreciated. Will be letting them free range in yard sometimes.
I used deep litter method for almost five years not and I’ve finally stopped doing it in the run. It’s a messy pain and I find sand does good in the run, easy to separate the poop!

Lol don’t say that about deep litter!! I have swung back and forth between both camps, drove hubby crazy “lets get sand” “no sand need clippings” back and forth. Now that I made a decision and plan on sticking with it, with a post you have mean leaning the other way again lol!!

That’s what I figured. I used to muck out our horses stalls and I know what’s at the bottom of deep litter, even if the chickens are turning it on top!

I adore deep litter in the roost and hen house, but the run sees too much activity. My girls make an absolute mess of the run and yard. They always manage to get pine shavings fifteen feet from the run somehow

I’m sure before it’s all over we will go from one or more different things for the run - trial and error! Rain all summer and dry weather in winter will probably make that decision change for each season !
