NEW Dangerous DOG LAW- needs attention!

BSL (breed specific legislation) and weight limits are not the answer to this horrible problem. The answer is fixing the problem of dogs being out of control and owners not taking the time to properly train their dogs. As mentioned repeatedly, dogs need to be trained to stay on their own property. As someone's sig line says (sorry I can't remember the person, but I do remember the line) my pet becomes someone else's PEST when it's not in my own yard. Do I think it's a good idea to shoot every dog that happens to stray onto my yard (as another poster mentioned in a different thread)? -- ABSOLUTELY NOT. However, I do not blame the dogs so much as the owners. I know dogs do sometimes jump fences or go through gates inadvertently left open and will wander a neighborhood. I also know of dogs that LIVE to get out and satisfy their aggression (as witnessed by the poor woman who saw her dog killed by an aggressive dog). It's not the breed, it's the dog. Just like the "guns don't kill people; people kill people", specific breeds of dogs aren't all overly aggressive, just certain dogs, regardless of breed, weight, etc.

There are so many laws on the books now that could and would control things.. If enforced which they are not, and if new laws are not enforced either the only ones that will be paying is the already responsible people, like myself with $10,000+ worth of kennels and so on. I do want to see irresponsible owners take responsibilty, they cause me grief all the time.

I own alot dogs, and take alot of precautions, mostly training, and xtra fences to prevent accidents such as an unruly child from wandering into my dogs areas only as a safety precaution, but not because my dogs are aggressive, None of my dogs had better ever bite a child, EVER.
If any of my animals would harm another person, livestock, ect, I will take full responsibilty for their actions, because I respect other people and their rights too.

I have hunting dogs, working dogs, and a few pets too, but I consider my dogs an investment just like someone that owns cattle. If my cattle are loose and on the road and wreck someones vehicle, I would be responsible for damages and I feel that laws should be enforced in the same manner on dogs or any other animal, they are your responsibilty.

If you are required to insure your dogs, how many people will be able to afford more insurance these days? Did you know that there are ready having city ordinaces passed about amount of square footage required per dog for a kennel? Anti chain and tethering laws are already in place in some cities? If you are breaking the law for tethering your dogs, and kennels have to be concreted, whats next? only indoor climate controlled containment? This is the start Animal Rights Actvist way to eliminate working dogs, slowly chipping away at our liberties

People are the problem. People that are naive, that allow their dogs to run free, that have no common sense no matter how good a dog it is it is still an animal, and animals will be animals. I agree I have the right to not want the neighbors dog on my property, but I also have the responsibilty to keep mine on my own property. where does it end? that people have to be told how to act and the difference between right and wrong? Ignorance is not an excuse to allow your cute pooch to run loose, however more goverment is not going to fix this either. The criminals will still be breaking the law and the responsible people will still be paying the price for it.

SO PLEASE help vote bill DOWN.

I don't like being involved in politics myself, however the people that are involved will be the ones who decide yours & my rights and liberties.

I just have a question here, why would any responsible dog owner not be for something that would require ALL dog owners to keep their dogs at home?

Dogs should never be allowed to run lose in the neighborhood. They all need to be under the control of their owner, wherever they are.

The problem facing many animal control officers is they have to SEE the dog out of its yard before they can do anything about it, and by the time they are dispatched and get to the scene, the lose dogs are long gone, so it is a wasted trip. I'm guessing this bill is designed to force people to build fences to keep the masses safe.

I can't tell you how many times people have told me their dogs never leave their property. Really, then why did I see them 1/4er mile down the road chasing another dog? That kind of thing is just too much in the long run. Dogs are great, keep them home, no matter the breed.​

I am very sorry for your mothers loss and to here about the terrifying experience and death of your moms dog. This makes me very sad & angry too. I would like to see extreme punishment for those attacking dogs owners. If those were my dogs I would have had them destroyed myself. I can understand why you feel like you do. I wish you would take it to civil court and sue for everything you could get from the irresponsible owners.

I still feel that those negligant owners are the kind of people who are the ones that break the law and will continue to break laws, while responsible owners will be the ones who pay the price unless they are punished and made examples of.

This Bill is just another step in the "Dumbing Down of America". People just need to use common sense. Blanket laws are not the answer. Remember that once we loose a freedom we rarely get it back.
If laws in the boonies are not being upheld....get involved. The people that will suffer are the ones in the city with busy body neighbors.
I would like to restate that this will affect sport dogs....flyball, dock diving, agility, frisbee, schutzhund trials. I participate in all of these. Do you enjoy watching the Purina Incredible Dog Challenge? Well, if this law is passed it won't be held in States that have laws like this. These sport dogs are not the problem.

This is not the "right" bill for the problem. Vote NO!

I guess I missed the point of the bill then, because when I read it, all I saw was an attempt to make people contain their dogs. Yes, there is a size issue, and yes small dogs can do incredible damage. But the heart of what I read, is aimed at forcing containment, the second half of that would be fines for lack of containment. The bill would not effect dog sports, or obedience training/work. It is aimed at lose dogs as I read it.

Wow! hear we go...First of all The defination of Vicious-evil,unruly, malicious. This needs to be sent to the American Kennel Club. They have a whole dept. set up to handle all the anti breed, size, ordiances. I have seen some really bad little dogs. Its just they can't inflick seriuos damage. I have a six pound min. pin. girl who thinks she can take on the world and don't stick any part of your body near her fence. So now what? she could rip off noses and pinky fingers.....But again the owners part. When my dogs are in there yard doing there job I am here observing. Where I can intercept a sistuation if I am not here my dogs are in my house. You can best believe the PETA idiots are behind alot of this .... People who support this group are actually unknowledgable about what these people really stand for. They want no pets, no any thing to do with living things and would love to see everything out the picture axcept the poor vegis they eat...I have worked around these people and been in courts with these people. Again when we donate money we need to do home work. Yeah Pam Anderson you just don't know what you support....

How many people on this forum have a fence around their yard that is capable of containing their dogs?

How many times in the last year have you found one or more of your dogs off of your property, even if it was only a foot off of your property?

How many lose dogs do you typically see in your area in a year?

I think the first citation in our area is some where around $25. but if my dogs are out (and they have gotten out this year-someone opened my gate) then the damage they could have done sure wouldn't be covered with $25. paid to the county.

How do you propose these problems be resolved?

I have a fence around my yard to contain my dogs. The only time they go out is with me or one in my family. If I open the gate and leave it open, they won't go out until I give permission to them. I have them trained that way. I am the alpha dog and I lead this pack. For that reason, they look to me before they do anything outside of their normal. I have not had strays on my property either. I learned to train mine in the way I have. It works for me and our neighbors who are over 3 miles away. I shouldn't have my dogs labeled as dangerous when they haven't earned it. I understand some folks don't take responsibility of their dogs, but why should those of us that do have to pay for them? I understand some people's siding with this, since they have had to deal with those other owners, at the same time everyone needs to realize not everyone just lets their dogs run free and do whatever they want. There will always be 2 sides to a battle.
