New Duck House

Since ducks don’t roost like chickens, but prefer to sleep on the the ground, you can consider removing some or all of the roosting bars to make it easier to get in and clean. Just don’t remove anything that is part of the structural integrity of the coop without doing something to replace the loss of integrity.

If the attached run is just resting on the ground and has no floor, consider how to anchor it to the ground and how to prevent burrowing predators from digging their way into the run. People do this by putting an apron of HWC on the ground around the run or by trenching down a foot around the edge of the run and burying wire extending vertically a foot into the soil. There may be other options.

Predator proofing the run from nocturnal predators will be especially important if the door between the run and the coop is not securely predator proof.

I learned just how predator proof a run needs to be recently when a raccoon scaled my 7’ tall run and squeezed in under a corner of HWC that was missing a screw, despite being held down by a heavy, anchored tarp covered by several inches of snow and ice. It was heartbreaking. Better secure than sorry!

The floor of the run is concrete so nothing is going to dig underneath it. I'm planning on removing the roosting bars & modifying the nesting boxes to make them bigger, so if they decide to use them they will have plenty of room!!!!
