New duck mom needs advice please

Just want to mention that some sources say aspirin is not the best for ducks or ducklings...for anti inflammatory for my ducks, my vet said some turmeric in the food may help.

I have not given him any asprin.. he doesn't appear to be in pain. He is coughing a bit now, I think it is due to us having to admister the niacan down his throat. He is a funny little guy, if he thinks you put anything in his food or water, he won't touch! So I got some VetRX last night and have been using that to help him. He is moving around more, by pulling himself, and he will stand for about 15-20 second by himself. So in my eyes its a beginning!!!

Well, just wanted to let you guys know, I took Saturn to the Vet. And I'm sad to report that he has hip displasia... he gave me some vitamins for Birds and told me to give him 3 scoops a day. "How is in two weeks is how he will be.". that is what the Vet told me. So I am going to give his medicine, and research Hip displasia and see if there is anything else I can do for him. He is just the sweetest little guy ever, and I want to do everything my power to make sure he has the best life possible..... Thank you all for helping me out, oI really appreciate it!

Chickweed is a natural pain reliever also...And plantain helps with inflammation. I've never had a duck with hip dysplasia but my son and my dog both have had it...Can be painful and cause swelling in hip joint. Good luck getting your lil one to feel better. Pekin can have these type of problems due to breeding them to grow quicker and bigger for meat. My girl is huge and slow and clumsy. I worry bout her legs a lot. She has trouble getting out of pond because of it sometimes.

Some people make slings for their ducks to take weight off the legs at least some of the time.
I was actually thinking about doing that for him! I just have to get some plans on how to do that. We had a bunny who was paralyzed and we made her a wheelchair. I love my pets so much, like I said I will do anything in my power to make sure they have the best life I can provide them!

Thanks for the update & sorry the diagnosis isn't something that can be cured. I hope you're able to find some good info during your research. Will you keep us posted? :D
I will definitely! Hoping to post some pictures of Saturn with his sling! I am just so frustrated with the fact this could have been prevented, the store I got him from had him on Medicated Chick starter. He was marked haalf off because he was getting too big to "sell" so he was about 3wks when I purchased him. I just wonder if he wasn't on that for so long if he wouldn't be having this problem.. I will probably never know, but I do plan on making him a sling, and giving him the best life possible!!

Bless your heart!

Not sure it could have been prevented. Many of the medicated chick starters are fine for ducks. They only lack the proper amount of Niacin for ducks.
I agree, its just so hard to watch my little guy trying to move around and only go a few steps... but he is as sweet as can be! I took him to the vet yesterday and got so many comments on how mellow he is! I bring him outside to be around his flock. They are sometimes happy to see him, but there are other times they peck at him. So he normally sits with me and enjoys the nice weather. I got the supplies to make him a wheelchair, so when it is done I will post pictures!!
