It is because they were sexed. Mine had purple bands on their left leg for Pekin females. I cut them off with tiny scissorsJust noticed that all the ducklings have bands on their legs....never seen that before. I'll have to clip them off carefully, I guess.
I guess if I ever order ducks again, I’ll go straight to Metzger Farms.I had a similar experience (I live in Michigan) and had 3 ducklings that I purchased from Meyer Hatchery also and they shipped from California. I was so worried because I chose Meyer specifically for their proximity to me. I had previously learned that they ship from different locations through messaging with them asking why they cannot ship chicks and ducks together and they told me that because the ducklings come from another location. I did NOT think it would be California. I feel your frustration and sorry you lost one of your babies! And yes, @quackiemama is right, they band their legs to identify which breed of ducklings they are.. at least Meyer does that.. I'm not sure about the sexing because I got all females.
10000000%!!!!I guess if I ever order ducks again, I’ll go straight to Metzger Farms.
I still think the hatcheries should make this more transparent.
