Hey all! I'm in Central Mass. Just got our first chickens Sunday, all egg layers. Any tips for dealing with the random cold weather? Our coop isn't heated and I feel bad for our chickens. I am making sure their water isn't frozen, but is there anything else I can do for the girls?

Are they adults? If so, don't worry about them, they're wearing down coats

Just be sure they have dry bedding and can get out of the wind.

Yes, they are. All the birds are a year and a half to two years of age. That makes me feel much better. They've got their coop to go into, plus it makes a really good wind barricade.

I've used two 250 watt red heat lamps for juveniles when putting them outside for the first time in early April. They adapted in a week. If your girls are used to being outside, they should be fine with your set up. They hate wind and rain.

Today my free ranging girls are up on the porch steps soaking up the sun out of the wind.
