Welcome! Yes, there are actually quite a few of us Alaskans on BYC, though we seem to chat more on FB than here nowadays.
Lots of accumulated information from people in SE up to your area and over to the West Coast. Most of us are in SouthCentral, but it's not that much different here.
Thanks everyone. I've learned a lot already. Including how many different opinions are out there!!! I will be putting the finishing touches on my coop over the winter, (first snow predicted for next weekend) welcoming the chicks in the spring, and I appreciate having back-up!
If the local feed store stocks the same mix they had last year, (they usually only stock cold hardy breeds for up here, unless they're meat birds, then they'll be in the freezer before we're in the freezer, if ya know what I mean) I'll have a Silver Laced Wyandotte "Wyatt", an Australorp "Fat Albert", a Plymouth Barred Rock (Rocky) a light Brahma (Bullwinkle) and a couple Easter Eggers, (names pending). I know. All boy names. My grandfather was named Shirley, so do I care?
Spouse said I should get a Three Mile Island Red. Drew a picture, three legs, two heads, extra drumstick, yummy!! I'll name it Einstein!
And then daughter was looking at the list of birds the feed store stocked last year. This is the way the conversation went (please don't be offended, Silkie lovers.)
Her: "What's a Silkie?"
Me: "It's a stupid looking chicken."
Her: "But what's it look like?"
Me: "Like a toy poodle with it's back end missing."
Her: "But I want to see what it looks like!"
I show her a picture on the net.
Her voice goes up two octaves.
Her: "IT'S ADORABLE!! YOU HAVE TO GET ONE!"
So we're planning on one Bantam Silkie to keep peace in the family; we will name it "Wookie". She will hold it on a towel on her lap and they will watch Sponge Bob Square Pants together, until she leaves to go to Veterinary School. And then I can have three egg omelettes and still lose weight.
