I'm a newbie, 10 girls (seems to be so far), 2 BO, 2 BA, 1 DB, 1 GLW, 1 BC and 3 cutie banties a frizzle, sizzle and silky, have 2 coops in our own large completely covered run, we live on several mountain acres with lots of predators, raised all from chicks now 11-12 weeks old, working on organic diet, fermented foods, healthy treats, want to eventually free range with strict supervision, doing well with coop training except the little ones are a bit behind, love them all, i also keep bees, all challenges at 9000' and cold winters, love reading multiple threads and just learning in general

We have lots of predators also. I would love to personally help you with any questions you may have as I can probably relate to you easily!

Be sure to check out our leaning center; lots of great stuff there!

Again welcome!

Welcome to BYC!

Down to your south in the mountains of New Mexico! We are up at 7,000 feet and yes, short growing season, huge temp swings, little oxygen, LOL. Tough up at these altitudes.

Enjoy all your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

Your banties will be a lot happier and live longer if they DON'T free range. Frizzles, Silkies, etc. often have their vision obscured by their big crests and beards. They also are not flyers but, jump when they need to get going. They are just what predators are looking for. Silkies generally sleep in a pile on the floor(coop) than roost. another big advantage to predators.
