In the Brooder
Hello,
My family first got chickens 3 years ago. My two daughters begged for chickens and the next thing we knew, we were building our first coop. We started with 6 Isa Browns and they have been great laying hens thus far. My girls take an active part in their care taking. We love having fresh eggs everyday and love watching the funny chickens all over our yard.
My oldest daughter, who is 10 and also a member of Backyard Chickens, started raising broiler chickens for a 4H project and won first place in her chicken showmanship last year. This year she begged for some Silkie chickens for her new pets. My youngest daughter age 8 also got to pick out a new breed and so we bought a couple of Austra Lorps for her and 2 Silkies. So here we are again building another coop!
Currently we have 8 chickens as pets. We live on 2 acres and also enjoy gardening and camping. Both girls keep us busy with all their activities but we love to come home to the quiet life in the country.
It has been a great experience watching our kids help with this hobby and we have enjoyed the chickens so much. Each chicken definitely has their own personality. We have been following Backyard Chickens for some time now and really appreciate all the useful information. Thank you!
