I wish i would have joined sooner......my intent was not to be a chicken farmer but an egg harvester. Having said that my Buff's had very different ideas.
I'm sorry to say that my first go hasnt been a complete success. 5 hatched over the past day or so....i lost 3 of 5....
I hope to use BYC to increase my success rate. I cant believe how much fun it is to warch the birds run all over the property.

Hi Tom, nice to meet you. Did you use an incubator? Some brands are probably better than others or easier to use. I'm very hatched any so can't really advice EXCEPT a lot of folks get silkie hens to use as natural incubators. Silkies generally go broody fairly often. You can swap out their eggs for fertile eggs of any breed you want and they will raise them as their own.

Nice to have you here!

Thanks everyone. Here is a thought and question. I have three Buff Orpintons..two went broody. I also have two barred rocks (if thats how you spell it). Anyway......the onky chicks to live were Buffs (2)....all the Barred Rocks...were ahirt lived. I founs another Rock tonjave hatched yesterday.....only with the broody and two chicks.......it also was short lived. I think the hen is killing them.....could this be?
