New from S.E. AZ

Hello,

We just purchased 6 chicks - the store said they were all great layers (which is what we wanted - more dual birds). Well, we got home and looked up the breeds: 3 Australorps (2 died in week 1) and 3 Silkies - (WHICH are these really "good layers"? The reviews state they are more "decorative".) - I should have researched them a bit more, but alas, we have 3 Silkies, which will be fun and 1 Australorp. We built a coop/run and have almost finished it. EXCITED to begin this first time adventure in the middle of the AZ desert!

Thanks for the welcome! We're SOUTH of the White Mountains, on the San Carlos Apache Reservation. Hot and dry, but we love it! We're working on the Rez and enjoying it immensely - and glad that raising chickens is totally allowed!

While silkies aren't usually known for their egg-laying, they do very well in hot weather (from one Arizona resident to another). Plus, they're super adorable and affectionate.

Hello, and welcome! I'm in AZ., too! Glad that you joined, and luck with your flock! Silkie's lay egg's on the small side, and are notorious for laying a few egg's and then wanting to sit on them to hatch them.
