Hi Everyone, My name is Jen. I am here to learn! I currently am in an apartment, but dream of a home in the woods and homesteading or being as self-sufficient as possible.

I also joined Sufficient self.com to learn. I enjoy Backwoods Home and Self-Reliance Magazines but am looking forward to actually having people to talk to about aspects of homesteading.

Basics about myself:
I am a 40-year-old Christian Lesbian who takes care of the elderly for work. I adopted a rescue dog Bailey (on my header) in October who has been my life for these past 5 months. He was abused :( and has been learning to trust and is enjoying his life at home and at doggie daycare.

I love being outside, as much as I can! My dream is to just drop a house in the woods, near God made water! And to raise a family there! I love all kinds of animals, crafting (esp. needle crafts), and playing board and card games. I also enjoy music (listening and singing), reading and writing.

In addition to learning, I'd be interested in making likeminded friends and purchasing fresh eggs if anyone sells theirs in my area. (My area goes basically from Amherst Ma to Springfield Ma, and out about 20 miles each way!)

Glad to meet you, Jen, and welcome to BYC! You are so good to rescue Bailey. In my experience with rescue animals, they tend to rescue me as much as I rescued them! I enjoyed reading about your dreams of self sufficiency. I hope you get to live that life some day soon!

In case you want to know more about chicken care,
Here are my favorite beginning articles that helped me as a newbie. I hope you will find them helpful as well. All articles are short, have illustrations, and reviews, which are often worth looking at for the comments.

1. Intro to chicken keeping

2. Common mistakes & how to fix them

3. Ventilation (important to chicken health), with helpful links to coop designs organized by climate (because what is just right for my New England hens won't work for my brother's Arizona chickens)

3(a). Farmers Almanac on Building Coops (Includes size requirements!) Allowing plenty of space for chickens is really important because, even as chicks, they will start pecking each other or plucking their own feathers, or become unhealthy if they are overcrowded. Here is a link to Colorado State Extension's publication on space and temperature requirements for chicks as they age.

4. Predator protection for new & existing coops

5. Dealing with a muddy coop and run

6. Gardening for chickens

7. BYC Lists of Chicken Ailments and Cures

** There is even an article on introducing dogs to chickens!

To look for articles on your own:

A. Use the SEARCH button, but use the Advanced Search choice, and select ARTICLES at the top of the box. Just enter your keyword(s) and scroll through your results!

B. I find it helpful to notice the rating and reviews. All articles are by BYC members, and all the reviews/ratings are as well. The ratings help a newbie like me sort the most useful and reliable articles.

C. You can bookmark the articles or posts you think you want to refer to again using that bookmark icon at the top of articles or posts. You can find them again by clicking on your own avatar and looking at the list of bookmarks you have built up!

Best wishes from the Eastern side of the state, where my hens are not yet laying like it's spring! (chickens slow down or stop laying in winter)

Thank you for the sweet message about Bailey. Yes I feel like he’s rescuing me as well.

Thank you for all of the advice. I went right to introducing dogs to chickens!
