Hey Gang! My name is Cynthia and we just bought a 4.5-acre tiny farm in Roseburg, Oregon, that we've named Rosemary Hill, and we are very excited because we will finally be able to have chickens again!!! So, this time I've signed up here so we can stay in touch with other chicken parents.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We used to own an acre several years ago and had ten hens, but a move meant our ladies had to move to our friend's property. We LOVED having chickens and still miss them to this day.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None, but are planning on having a larger flock at 20-25 or so. We want enough eggs for us and then enough to sell.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We plan on having a variety of good layers -- all of the big, beautiful fluffy ones like the Wyandottes, Buffs, Australorps, Araucanas, Plymouth Rocks, etc.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
THE EGGS TASTE BETTER and are better for us, we love how they clean the yard/house up from bugs, and they are like fabulous yard art that follows us everywhere, clucking happily as they do their chicken business.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Art, writing, gardening, creating just about anything, and cooking. We also plan to add beekeeping to our list of Things To Do At Rosemary Hill.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Husband is a reforestation forester, I am a writer and artist, and our teen girls are busy with school but also love to create art, read, cook, and take care of our gardens and all the kitties (we have six). And like I mentioned above, we are planning on adding bees to Rosemary Hill for two reasons -- to add to the bee population in general and to add a little honey income to the mix.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I've known about this website for years. I was googling coop plans this morning and stumbled upon it again, and so here I am.
First, we have to decide on a coop plan -- we LOVED our last coop that we designed, and it was actually moved to the chickens' new home when we moved, but it would be too small for the flock we're planning on. Plus, everyone is telling us to be more predator-conscious here, so we want to make sure the Hens of Rosemary Hill are safe in our new home. Once we decide on a plan and settle on a location, then we can start building. THEN we can order chicks!
Happy clucks and dirt baths,
Cynthia
