New from upstate ny

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

X2 on drumstick diva. Buff orpingtons are my personal favorite breed. They are generally affectionate and friendly. Plus they lay large brown eggs are good in confinement and cold areas. Silkies, black australorps and barred rocks are all friendly breeds too.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. With a daughter that young I would suggest going with Silkies, which are small, sweet, gentle, friendly bantams. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to go with, good luck with your flock (and you daughter).)

I guess I"ll have to go with the Orpington Australops, or bard rocks then. I need them to be working girls to convince my husband. He thinks I'm a little silly. We have 2 acres and I keep a large garden about 10x40. And I've wanted chickens before moving here or having my daughter. So I planned on using them to help me compost, for eggs, and to clear the garden twice a year. I will not be able to allow them outside free unfortunately. They would not last long. We not only have coyotes and fox but also fishers, bald eagles and bears. I have never actually seen a bear but they have been seen on trail cameras. My plans for a coop and run are, I'm hoping more like a fortress than a simple coop. How do you guys go on vacation with them? No one I know well enough to ask has chickens. And assuming I can't just pile the food and water an say see ya in a week.

Hi Upstate NYers! I live in Rensselear county and am new to chickens. In fact, I'm getting my first chicks TODAY

! I'm so excited.
My far is complete with these guys.

I've got 10 pullets and 2 roos to protect them. I have 2 EE, 2 silver cuckoo marans, 2 golden cuckoo marans, 2 salmon faverolles, and 2 buff brahma bantams. The two roos are 1 welsummer bantam and 1 salmon faverolle.

I'd love to hear anything and everything you upstaters do you protect free range chickens from predators.

Like my brooder? Home made. The chicks seems to be very happy, its 10 feet long so they have plenty of room to run around.
I got my flock one of those chicken swings, thinking they could get some exercise. They absolutely love it! They wont stop jumping on it and trying to swing it. They've even figured out that when they are all on it they are strong enough to swing it as chicks. Super cute. I highly recommend.
