Two and a half hours today. We had some rain.
While nowhere near enough, it's a start and there is more forecast for tomorrow.
They look best of friends and perhaps they are but it seems to me that it's all on Mow's terms.

You’re right, that’s an awful lot of leakage for that mix. I too am used to the leakage only being present on the wings, but I haven’t seen many individuals quite as mature as these ones. Even so, the red on the saddles is a bit extreme. Maybe a generational RSL mix?

Or.....maybe someone was trying to make a sex link but got the breeds swapped (instead of the red roo x white hen, they bred a white roo x red hen) so all the chicks look like red sex links, but aren't sexable until the standard age?

Paprika has gone broody Evidently she doesn't think we've got too many chickens already...

I thought she was going to take a year off this year, given that Fez, Polka and Oxwich have already bumped up the numbers, but apparently she was just waiting until the littles got their wings. And as she is the best broody here (in terms of long term success), I might just let her have four dark eggs whose mum's genes deserve to be perpetuated.

Well, as I pretty much expected, she was back on the nest when I got home. So back into broody jail. Sigh.

Update to the update (to the update? I’ve lost track):

After putting Trudy back in the dog cage the night before last, I left her in there all day with food and water until 4 in the afternoon, letting her rejoin the flock.

When they put themselves up around 8 pm, Trudy was in the coop but on a roost, as far from the nest boxes as possible. I checked again around 9:30, and she was still there. This morning (don’t know about during the night), she was perched on some branches at the other end of the run, and popped out with the others when I opened the run at 7.

So maybe we’re good?

How long does it usually take for laying to resume after broodiness with no resulting chicks is done?

I think it depends on how long the bird was broody prior to catching/breaking it. If it was caught relatively quickly, in the first day or 2, I would expect it to take about a week to resume laying. The longer they're broody, the longer it takes to resume (IIRC)...

It's very variable in my experience. Some will have a mini or - especially at this time of year - a full moult before resuming, and that can add a month or more. Also - though not relevant to yours - their age. Senior hens may not resume till spring next year.

The Elven bunch have another week of life and experience under their belts wings.

They have now visited most of the property that the chickens use.
Mum has taught them where the figs are, which resulted in my T-shirt being covered with fig seeds while trying to get the second photo.

They are now getting a bit more easily distracted and independent, but Galadriel’s cluck is still the law. The few instances a chick has been separated, mum was quick about finding it, while keeping track of the rest.
We also have what I’d consider our first definitive cockerel, though I suspect @Skyeknight ‘s guesses were not far off at all. My very early guess is 3 pullets and 4 cockerels.
