I can't do this with 16 week stags. I don't know what you have, but assuming they are gamefowl, what you have now is a huge coincidence. At a year you might have a slow maturing line. Either way you have a ticking time bomb.

I’m trying to understand American gamefowl.
If I took say 40 well bred chicks and raised them in a free range farmyard situation… after 16 weeks what is going to happen? There will be 20 roosters and 20 hens… Is there a top rooster that kills all the challengers? Or will they split up in separate groups and respect each other’s space?

They coexist, but they don't stop fighting with select birds, as they mature the include more and more birds in what they wont run from. As they mature a scuffle turns to more and sooner or later you have 10 stags mixed up in it. If you don't get back in time that's the end of that brood.

That sounds like a bad situation. If the American game is out crossed to something like a jungle fowl or leghorn… Is that gameness lost in the first generation?

If you're not willing to go all in with games and take care of them properly and accept they are a handful then do the chicken a favor and dont get into them. That is the exact reason they get a bad rap.
