Goats don't technically need grain. It's good for growing kids, milking does, and if you want to put weight on them. It's important not to give too much grain because it's high in phosphorus. Too much phosphorus (when compared to their calcium intake) can lead to urinary calculi. So how much grain/phosphorus they get will be dependent on how much calcium is in the hay/alfalfa. Not enough roughage can also lead to issues like goat polio, which can be deadly.

You should always provide a goat mineral free choice. You'll want to make sure it has copper. Also check with a local vet or knowledgeable breeder in your area regarding copper in the ground and if you'll need to provide a copper bolus or not. Too much copper can kill a goat so you want to make sure your goats actually need it before you give a bolus. And don't just go by the "fish tail" thing; it's not an accurate way to tell if they are deficient.
