New Great Pyraneese puppy and i need help

If you want a GUARD DOG, you need to have him out with the animals you want him to guard.

Rig up a pen so he is safe, but can see and smell them, and they can see and smell him also.

Then gradually introduce them, but do it EVERY DAY for as long as possible. He WILL be scared at first, but he willl never learn NOT to be if he's not there with them.

They do the majority of their bonding from 8-16 weeks, and its very important that he be with HIS animals as much as possible.

NOW is the prime time to start his training if you expect him to do what he was bred for.

Wow, excellent read on the LGD! My labrador lives with my poultry, my neighbors think I am cruel but if she wasn't out there she isn't on the job and her mind won't be on the job either.

Thanks.... I was just being VERY soft hearted seeing as he had such a rough start with the scabies which we're still fighting but it 90% better than it was....

I'll put the portable fence in the barn and try it this weekend to see how he does....

I just didn't want to see him get hurt by the goats butting him..... Using the portal fence never occurred to me to get him at least out there.... He loves staying on the porch for hours since its been cold out.... I was worried with him being so young that it was too cold for him but he insisted on staying out in 35 degree weather so I guess he'd be okay out in the barn.....

LOL It's impossible NOT to be soft hearted with a big fluffy pup!
Dont give the weather any thought. My Maremmas will sleep on bare ground in a cold freezing rain. Their coats are so dense that water never touches their skin.

If your pen is in a dry area, build a "house" with bales of hay or straw, and fill the inside with enough loose straw so he can dig in if he gets cold. You'll soon find that heat bothers them FAR more than cold

The best way to cure the scabies (mange) is DAILY doses of Ivomec 1% , given orally, at 1/10 ( one TENTH) ML per 10 lbs of body weight.

One of my dogs had Demodex mange, and it took a couple of months to cure it.

How could you NOT be softhearted over something that looks like this?:

Thanks for the info on the Ivomec.... I have the pour on type, can I give that to him orally??

Already spoke to DH and he's gonna help me move the pen into the barn.... He's a softie even more than me....

It would be impossible to measure the correct dose with the pour on.
Get a bottle of 1% Injectable, and a 1ML syringe , marked in 10ths.
I measure up the dose, and then put it into a larger syringe, minus the needle of course, with a little sugar water, and squirt it on the roof of the mouth so they dont choke on it.
That same dosage can be given monthly to treat heartworms and most other parasites EXCEPT tapeworms.

DO NOT USE IVOMEC ON COLLIE BREEDS OR MIXES

A 50 ML bottle of 1% Ivomec is $35-40, but will keep for a year or more, and will save a TON of money when used instead of "heartguard" heartworm pills. I've been using it on all 5 of my dogs for over 4 years with no problems.

Raise the pup with the animals you want to protect.

They need to bond when young.

If you truly want a protection animal it needs to be outside with the animals.

Our Pyranese had 11 puppies a month ago....They are the cutest darn things I have ever seen.... I have a post on it in this area somewhere...And as soon as I figure out how to upload the pictures on the laptop I can finally post some pictures of them....Been without a computer for too long....
Anyway Macy is a very good mom she is even teaching the puppies things at the young age they are.... It's going to be sad to see them go when they do....We are keeping them with the mom for 10 weeks(obviously more if they don't go at that age). They all are healthy and well PUPPIES...They love there toys and even better your toes...hahaha
Jackyl is our 5 month old 60+ pound male Pyrenese puppy we got back in Oct....He is such a hoot to watch....The doesn't know his own size yet and will try and fit into the smallest of spots or even when running outside if he hits a patch of ice he is doing the "Bambi Slide" all the way across it....

Your really going to enjoy your puppy......

look forward to two full yrs of dealing with a puppy, it takes them about that long or a bit longer and you will notice a serious change in them for the better ....they are great as pups and beyond your wildest dreams as adults

they will chew anything they can get their teeth into, dont be too hard on them for this as it is their nature as pups and they are only doing things that come natural to them, they will grow out of it

the sooner you get a goat or two to put with the pup the better you will be, they will do a much better job if they are raised with the animals they are to protect

they are very sensative dogs, be gentle but firm when correcting them

do not give your pup more to handle than he is able to, he is a pup after all....pups can be trusted as far as sight, then they are like kids left alone, trouble will find them
