That's one of my favorite coops. I think it is very pretty as well as being well-designed.
Mine is a similar design, with a window and storage beneath the henhouse. I highly recommend a window with a screen (good ventilation in summer) and storage beneath (chicken feed, oyster shell, etc. right there).
the coop is coming along slowly lol ..this is the first time i have ever built anything , so i am taking my time to make sure everything is level and square. I am prefabbing the coop inside my shop and will tear it down and move it outside to its permanent location to install the trusses and roof.... i may even sell this one and build a bigger coop ..maybe a 10x 16
...
i think the hardest part of all of this is deciding what breed to go with and actually finding someone with that breed... i can not find anything local
Ashtray, I can't believe it's your first time. It is beautiful. I love the design. I love the space underneath for those rainy days. If you lock your chickens up at night, I wouldn't worry too about wiring in underneath the pen (IMO)
i all ready wish i would have built the coup a little different... it would be nice to have a walk in storage space to store feed , bedding materail , etc. oh well ,live and learn
anyone think that 7 birds might be to many for the coop (4x8) i have decided i want (4) RIR ,, (2) wyandottes and
(1) barnevelder . also if i buy birds from a different seller would it hurt to throw all the birds together at once . i do not think i will have any luck finding one seller with all these breeds ..
one more thing what vaccination do chickens need and can i do that my self
on a side note who ever knew chickens would be so much work and fun lol i have spent the last 2 days just trying to find the breeds i want and working on the coop ......... i bet the real fun starts when i actually get the birds
Hey ashtray, that is the most awesome coop! Absolutely LOVE it and sure your chickens will feel like queens! Just curious, bout how much did it cost you to build? The hubby and I are looking to build a coop for our chickens come this spring and don't have tons of money. Would appreciate any info you can pass along.
I am in the design stage for the same coop too, with modifications.
For the run, I am laying down treated 4x4, and driving rebar in it to peg it down. On top of that, will be framed 2x4 wall. The end corners (the door end of the run), will have 4x4 blocks. This will be 4x4 treated wood, set in the ground and flush with the top of the sill. I will lag bolt that to the sill. I may bury the 4x4 legs of the coop, but will probably have them sit on concrete pavers.
My coop will also have framed walls. I will probably extend the four 4x4 legs up to the rafters. I have used ondura roof panels on a tree house that I made, and it is holding up well after 4 years. I will probably go with that again. I may use board and batten siding, and stain it.
How high is your center height (to the ridge pole) going to be? I guess 6'? Sloping down to what height? What about your total length from one end to the other? Looks like 16'. Those are the dimensions I am probably going to use. I have a little concern not being able to comfortably get in the coop if i have to.
A couple of other things. I am going to put my wire on the outside of the frame. Also, I will use welded hardware cloth as a skirt a couple of feet up, since it is very durable. I plan on sinking it 12 inches deep, with a 6 inches or so bent outward under ground. Predators will try to dig right at the fence, so if they do, they will meet up with the welded wire.
