Hi! :frow Welcome to BYC! I will leave all the construction advice to the builders, and just say go as big as you can because you WILL get more chickens, and you will also want enough space to separate a chicken from time to time. Just sayin', chicken math is real. :D
 
Welcome to BYC! Waiting until spring to establish a new flock is a great idea! Much easier when they can be out sooner! Be sure to browse through the coop builds here, a lot of them are very technical with step by step pics!

Hi :frow and welcome. If you are more than 5' tall, build higher than your head. You should also build into the ground to keep varmints from digging in from underneath and killing your birds at night. Varmints like rats and snakes, weasels and minks.

When we talk about "chicken math" we mean it is so easy to fall in love with chickens, you are going to want more. You may end up with a broody hen that wants to hatch chicks. Chickens are just so darn fun! So build tight, build strong - and build big!
