New guy, starting fresh

Hi :frow and welcome to the wonderful world of chickens! I assume your run is completely enclosed and safe from marauders? That being so, yes, by all means open the coop door and let your chicklets explore the world outdoors. They'll be cautious at first; chickens tend to be a bit, well .. "chicken." It helps keep them alive. Which is a good thing, because they taste like chicken, too! A word to the wise, you're going to need a bigger coop because of a disease we call "chicken math." I won't explain it. You'll see! :gig

:welcome

I agree with the others about letting them out in the run, looks like you have a nice place for them.

Best wishes and thanks for joining us!

Hey, new guy here from south Louisiana. Just picked up 6 pullets that are between 6-8 weeks old. I didn't really want to mess with day old baby chicks (maybe next time) so I went this route instead. I got 1 Ayan Cemani, 2 lavender Marans, 2 Ameraucana's and 1 Cream Legbar (I might have the legbar and the amaraucana's mixed up, I forgot which one was which) And they should be all hens, hopefully. I had 6 older hens when I moved into my house about a year ago that the previous owners left, but they were pretty much free range and didn't really have a coop of any sort and they ended up getting ate by something. So I decided to build a completely fenced in run area which came out to be 10x24 and attached it to a shed yard medium coop. So hopefully these will stay safe.

So a question... Since they are about 8 weeks old, am I ok to leave the door open to the run and let them come and go as they please? I haven't let them out of the coop yet cause it has been raining but I plan to let them out tomorrow when I wake up.

Hi! :frow Welcome to BYC! If your coop is inside your run, and your run is predator proof, you can let them out. In fact, if you have a really secure set up, you don't really have to close the coop door at the end of the day.

First of all, I have some ups and downs in my 2020 project breeding of ayam cemani rooster to turken to silkie to asil/thai to polish. The pullets are laying and I have blue jays and rats snatch some eggs. Earlier this month I mesh out every holes and openings in my coop. After that, my pullets are laying again like crazy. I was surprised how they all laying in one nest, except for the turken and silkie. As I like to do, put 10 eggs under one pullet and seperate the others. The eggs were half white and brown. Today as Feb 24, 2020, a white egg hatch and I know for sure it's from the polish pullet. Anyway, I wanted to say happy hatching and raising new flock for every reason. Stay safe and keep them chicks growing.
