Sooooooooooooo cute. I love it when they are little.
I think Ruby is going to be moving to Conn. I got a call today from a nice lady who had just lost her Husky of 12 yrs.
We were going to keep her but at this time it is probably better that we only keep one. We have to think of the best interest for Ruby.

I had this posted on the injuries, etc...thread but not one single person had any ideas, at least there were no responses. Can any of our local group think of what is going on here. I saw on the boards a lot of similar stories about hens all of a sudden not walking correctly and stumbling and falling. Is there a syndrome or ilness that can cause these symptoms?

Can anyone give me an idea? I purchased a pair of Pyncheons at a show. A week after I had them home, I lost the little roo. He seemed very boney, then when I examined the hen, she was also emaciated. I had not noticed they were not eating the food because they must have been flicking it out of the dish into the bedding. I then noticed her having a "gurgling" sound when she would breath, along with a wheeze. I did some reading here and saw that IM injections of Tylan 50 helped someone that had the same respiratory symptoms that this little hen was having. I was hesitant to inject her into the breast area with what I had read, plus she really had no meat there, so i alternated thigh muscles (yes, there was some muscle) for 3 days. She got allmost instantly better and is now breathing normally for about a month. She is an extremely picky eater, likes chick starter, will not eat crumbles, and loves her yogurt which I give her a couple times a week (about a spoonful muxed with starter). the other day, I noticed she was hesitant to walk and was doing so very awkwardly, seemed to be stepping on the toes of the opposite foot with each step. She prefers standing in one spot or lying down all day. Is it possible the Tylan did something to her muscle tissues? I gave her .05 on an insulin syinge as the dose as that was what I found the measure would be through researching the boards here on BYC. Any suggestions??? Sorry this is so long. If she was not such a friendly and calm little hen, i would have her put down, but she seems to be such a fighter.

I don't know but hope someone can help you.
I had a problem awhile back with one of the EE's I got at the Agway swap in Hooksett.
It was a problem with her eye. She became lethargic and kept her eye closed. I kept putting neosporin on it so it wouldn't harden closed and when I went to the feed store I asked about antibiotics. The lady gave me some that you add to the water and it helped alot. Within a few days she was back out with the others like nothing had happened. Come to think of it, neither one of the two I got that day have laid an egg yet. I was told they were only about a year or so old......................hmmmmmmmmmmm.
Anyway good luck and I hope you get help soon from someone who knows better than me.

Sorry, much too new to be any help with disgnosis. I do have a NH question and I thought since this is the NH chat thread I thought I would ask here.

Here goes...I have been speaking with the State Ag. office about becoming NPIP certified. They told me there is only one other flock in NH who has this. It seems pretty common on this board. Can anyone give me some insight as to why we do not do it much in NH. Is there a deterant or red tape that I should know about and do not?

thats not true, i had mine tested, my father had his and tony had his, and wayne did also, just this past dec. and yearly, so not sure why they would say that.

that's interesting. i know i am not npip yet since i am still working on getting my feet firmly wet with chickens before i decide which to breed and sell. i thought Chickn was a npip participant. i would think there would be others too!

darbella, were you switching the spot where you were injecting the Tylan into? i heard you shouldn't inject into the same spot with that stuff due to it ruining the muscle.

Maybe I am missing something in his explainations then. We have emailed back and forth 5 times now answering various questions for me. This was the question and answer, I copied it from his email. " 5) How many certified flocks are there in NH? Is there a list somewhere? ANSWER - NH has 1 certified NPIP flock, although there are approximately 7 flocks that are tested annually and have been listed in the NPIP catalog and on their website.

Do you guys know - Is the charge the same to be "tested" as opposed to "certified" ?

Sorry I did not intend to open a can of worms. I would like to be certified myself.
